-It's the 12th annual Austin City Limits Hall of Fame Honors, a celebration of the artists who've helped make "Austin City Limits" the longest running music program in television history.

This year, we honor and induct Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile with special guest Bonnie Raitt.

♪ ♪ The Austin City Limits Hall of Fame was created to honor the artists who have contributed to the legacy for the longest running music program in television history.

Tonight, we celebrate Brandi Carlile.

-♪ But it was right on time ♪ ♪ Yeah, yeah ♪ ♪ -I don't remember not knowing Brandi Carlile.

I feel like if there were past lives, we must have been sisters, cousins.

We must have been guys in a rock band.

I mean, she's so good at what she does, but she's also an artist.

She leads from her heart.

She brings people together.

♪ -I mean, Austin City Limits just stands for music, all kinds of music, you know, walks of life.

And Brandi should be in the ACL Hall of Fame because she is a singularly fantastic artist and she walks the walk and she is of the spirit of sharing music.

And that's what ACL is to me.

-♪ All of my friends who think that I'm blessed ♪ -Brandi Carlile is a consummate artist.

She represents the best of what Austin City Limits is all about.

She's a singular talent, original, authentic, genuine, a brilliant songwriter.

And then there's that voice.

-♪ ...really am ♪ -There's no doubt that she is more than qualified and deserving to be honored into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame.

♪ -♪ And they don't know... ♪ -She will bring everyone together.

She's like the -- You have a good word for it.

What is it?

-Well, well, I call her the sun first of all because she shines on people and you definitely feel when she's not shining on you.

[ Laughter ] No, but I always call her -- She's basically the quarterback, the receiver.

-Yeah.

-She'll take the ball and run it again.

[ Laughs ] -[ Sings indistinctly ] [ Cheers and applause ] ♪ -The perception is that she's the shooting star.

And it's like the reality I think is she's always been one.

And it's just took a minute for people to -- everybody to catch up.

-And that's the thing with Brandi.

Like, you know, she's always lifted up other artists around her.

♪ Just bringing everybody together and making sure everybody's got a place at the table and, uh, and just... That's the way she lives.

It's a real thing.

Oh, it's so good to be back here with you in this sacred space.

For more than half a century now, Austin City Limits has been a loving home to all kinds of real music and the real people who make it.

And tonight, it means the world to return to ACL, to induct into its Hall of Fame a great artist and human being who's a treasured part of our musical family.

She's also my dear friend, the one and only Brandi Carlile.

[ Cheers and applause ] I became aware of Brandi right around the time of her brilliant and beautiful second album, "The Story."

There was already a brushfire spreading about her in our Americana circles, and I was blown away by what I heard.

There's really no one quite like her.

The most amazing range and voice, clarion, clear and powerful and as far-reaching as her songs and lyrics.

20 years ago, out of the blue, I received a lovely handwritten letter from Brandi telling me how much she admired my music and what I do.

I don't think she knew I was already a fan.

Our instant mutual admiration was a great start to what has become a treasured friendship.

Over the years, my love for her as a brilliant artist has been matched by my admiration for how she runs her whole life, her career, her music, her band and crew, how she stands up for the causes and other artists she cares passionately about.

[ Cheers and applause ] Her incredible advocacy, fundraising work with her wife Catherine for their Looking Out Foundation... [ Cheers and applause ] ...and all this while managing to rock a solid home life with a successful marriage and raising two beautiful girls.

[ Cheers and applause ] Somehow, while making her latest amazing record, "Returning to Myself," Brandi also made a terrific new album with Elton.

There's other outside projects too, like reviving Tanya Tucker's career... [ Cheers and applause ] ...or working with Brandy Clark and The Highwomen and creating her own fantastic and successful music festivals.

[ Cheers and applause ] For me, the most wonderful of all is what Brandi has done for one of our most beloved heroes, Joni Mitchell.

[ Cheers and applause ] I was honored to be in the audience when she performed Joni's iconic "Blue" album in its entirety for her, Elton, and a rapt, adoring audience.

What a gift to us all.

[ Applause ] I think we should give Brandi a whole other award tonight just for helping Joni regain her voice.

[ Cheers and applause ] How does Brandi manage it all?

She may tell you it's the fishing that keeps her balanced, but we know different.

It's the passion, the vision and the drive to put her absolute all into everything and everyone she touches.

That's what makes her a hero to me and generations that will keep looking to her for inspiration.

Brandi's first Austin City Limits came in 2010, another in 2018 and most recently in 2022.

Brandi also performed for Roy Orbison's posthumous induction in 2017, and both inducted and performed for our friend Sheryl in 2023.

[ Cheers and applause ] Because Brandi has a way of showing up and coming through.

She came through for me when she made the time to come perform "I Can't Make You Love Me" with Sheryl Crow on piano when I received the Kennedy Center Honor back in the good old days.

[ Cheers and applause ] Thank you for that.

I could talk about the 11 Grammy Awards, her six Americana Awards and being nominated for two more this year, the two Emmy Awards, that Oscar nomination or being named one of Time's Women of the Year or the way you fought the good fight for justice and compassion this year in Minneapolis.

[ Cheers and applause ] But I'm not going to dwell on your accolades, just honor you tonight for the person you are and the great artistry, heart, and purpose that keeps you living your best life.

Brandi, you didn't just sing "America the Beautiful" beautifully at the Super Bowl.

[ Audience cheers ] You helped define what is still beautiful about this country and the world at a time when we really need to be reminded.

[ Cheers and applause ] And I -- And I know you'll continue to be a shining light for us all.

For all ACL has meant to us both, the generations of roots, jazz and world musicians, I'm so glad to be the one here tonight to honor and induct you, my dear sis, into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame.

This is an outrageous honor for me and the twins.

Me and my brothers, Tim and Phil Hanseroth... [ Cheers and applause ] ...first rolled into Austin, Texas, in our old Chevy van -- White Lightning, it was called -- over 20 years ago to play the Cactus Café over at the university.

[ Cheers and applause ] I remember getting to town and wanting two things -- Tex-Mex and to know where "Austin City Limits" was taped.

[ Cheers and applause ] I grew up poor and overly confident in rural Washington state.

[ Laughter ] And I never actually got to go on an airplane until I was 17, and I only really got to go to Idaho at that point.

But Austin, Texas, was somewhere I wanted to go because of Austin City Limits.

[ Cheers and applause ] That was the place everybody was allowed to discover music.

The Indigo Girls and Mary Chapin, Shawn Colvin, Vince Gill I saw, John Prine and Todd Snider, Sheryl Crow... [ Cheers and applause ] ...Wynonna, and come on, Bonnie.

[ Cheers and applause ] We were just arguing over the date of one of my favorite songs that Bonnie played here on "ACL."

Um, those were some of my favorite discoveries.

Uh, Austin City Limits platform music where everybody could see it.

And not just one song, but enough time for an artist to really unfold and show you who they are, a place where you can hear them speak between songs and get just comfortable enough to, like, take it off the rails a little bit.

And I knew, because of "Austin City Limits," I knew the Austin city skyline before I knew the Seattle skyline.

[ Laughter, cheers ] And me and the twins always hoped and believed that we'd be able to grace the stage at ACL.

It was always a major goal that we had set for ourselves and talked about it all the time.

It took us three albums to get our first appearance, but standing here now, I can hardly believe that we've been inducted into this hallowed hall and family.

[ Cheers and applause ] And that's what it really feels like is at the end of the day, it is.

We are proud to be a part of this family and "thank you" will never cover it.

But thank you, Bonnie, and thank you, Austin City Limits.

And I call those the "you without me" moments, you know, because you think you know them.

You think you know everything -- your -- their voice and the way they stand and you know their face when they're embarrassed, you know when they're afraid, um, you know when they're testing it out a little bit.

And -- And then suddenly there's a new face and a new voice and you've never seen it and maybe it's 30 seconds, maybe it's one minute, maybe they're taking a risk, maybe they're walking up to a group of kids they didn't know and introducing themselves.

And you can't be there.

You can't be the one to make that okay.

And it starts out small like that.

And then -- then they leave.

And those little moments are to prepare you for -- for the fact that they do.

And, um, I was thinking about that because I was seeing those moments.

When I was, um... ...about I think it was 19 years old, my first girlfriend and me, Jessica, we wanted to go see Bonnie Raitt play at the at the Puyallup Fair in Washington state.

And, uh, we couldn't afford a ticket.

We were too broke.

We were just broke lesbians working at a coffee stand in a grocery store.

But the Puyallup Fair is an open-air spot, you know?

So we went outside and we sat outside the fence and we listened to Bonnie sing all night.

And she played a good long set, and we felt like we were there.

And we felt like the luckiest girl in the world sitting there with our funnel cakes.

And, um, it's things like tonight that are just beyond my ability to fathom them.

Um, and I'm having one of the best nights of my life, but it's about to get a whole lot better because I'm going to welcome to the stage, my hero, Bonnie Raitt!
